Threads delays direct messaging feature for Instagram users

The Threads team is currently not developing a separate direct messaging system, despite user requests. Instead, users will continue to utilize the existing Instagram inbox for messaging. However, there are indications that Threads may enhance the messaging experience by allowing users to send Instagram messages directly from the Threads app. An unreleased feature was tested, which included a messaging button on user profiles, enabling quick access to send messages to Instagram inboxes. This feature was confirmed as a public test but is no longer active. The integration of Threads with Instagram remains strong, which poses challenges for users with private profiles. Messaging through Instagram DMs can be inefficient, especially if the recipient is not frequently active on the platform. This situation highlights a significant difference between Threads and its competitors, such as X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky, both of which have established direct messaging systems. X has had a direct messaging feature for years and has introduced additional functionalities like message editing under Elon Musk's leadership. Bluesky has also launched its direct messaging product and is planning to implement end-to-end encryption in the future. In contrast, Threads' reliance on Instagram for messaging may limit its appeal to users seeking a more independent messaging experience. As Threads continues to evolve, the potential for improved messaging features could enhance user engagement. However, the current lack of a dedicated messaging system may hinder its growth compared to other social networks that offer more robust communication tools.
