Story

Dismissed policeman Sachin Waze has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court contesting the application of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the National Investigating Agency's (NIA) investigation into the Antilia bomb scare and the death of businessman Mansukh Hiran. A division bench comprising Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande has instructed the NIA to submit an affidavit in response to Waze's extensive 185-page petition, which the court humorously likened to a PhD thesis. Waze, currently incarcerated in connection with the two cases, is seeking immediate release while his petition is under consideration. His counsel, Aabad Ponda, argued that the UAPA has been improperly invoked, asserting that the NIA initiated its investigation prior to the Act's application. Ponda emphasized that the case revolves around the recovery of gelatin outside a residence in Mumbai, questioning the appropriateness of the UAPA's application in this context. The NIA alleges that Waze conspired with others to park an explosives-laden SUV owned by Hiran, who had claimed possession of the vehicle before it was reportedly stolen. Hiran was later found dead in a creek in Thane on March 5, 2021. Following a brief hearing, the High Court has scheduled the next hearing for September 23, awaiting the NIA's response to Waze's claims.
