Chocolates Laced with Bhang Seized in Aurangabad; Seller Arrested

Recent reports from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in India indicate a troubling rise in substance abuse, particularly among youth. Addicts are increasingly consuming chocolates mixed with bhang, a cannabis derivative. Those who ingest these products are reportedly in an inebriated state for approximately eight to ten hours. This alarming trend has prompted local authorities to take action to address the growing public health concern. On October 28, 2024, the State Excise Department carried out a decisive operation that led to the arrest of Anil Bhagwandas Jaiswal. Initially tipped off about illegal drug sales, officials conducted surveillance that involved sending a dummy customer to Mahadev General Stores, where bhang products were confirmed to be sold. Following this investigation, a raid was executed, uncovering a significant stash of more than 4,200 bhang tablets. Investigators found that the bhang tablets were cleverly disguised within ordinary chocolate wraps, making them appealing and less suspicious to young consumers. The affordability of these products has contributed to their alarming popularity, raising concerns among local residents and prompting complaints. This incident has spurred the State Excise Department to heighten their enforcement efforts, especially in light of recent assembly elections.
