John Major criticizes Tory Rwanda plan as unBritish and reckless

Former Prime Minister Sir John Major has publicly criticized the current Conservative government's plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, labeling it as un-Conservative and un-British. In an interview with the BBC, he expressed his disapproval of the government's approach to immigration, stating that it is worse than the historical deportation of convicts to Australia. Major highlighted that the Rwanda scheme, which cost taxpayers £700 million without successfully deporting any asylum seekers, is not a humane way to treat individuals seeking refuge. Major also reflected on the impact of Brexit on immigration, agreeing with former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair that it has not reduced immigration as promised. Instead, he noted that it has led to an increase in migrants from non-European countries, contradicting the initial claims made by Brexit proponents. He expressed concern over the negative perception of immigration in society, which he believes is unjustified. In discussing the future of the Conservative Party, Major emphasized the need for a leader who can address long-term issues and attract genuine center-right supporters back to the party. He warned against merging with Reform UK, suggesting that such a move would be detrimental to the party's future. Reflecting on the recent general election defeat, Major acknowledged that a change in government was necessary and that the party must focus on its core values to regain support. He remains optimistic about the potential for rebuilding the party in a new and effective manner.
