Story

Genk is witnessing a transformative art installation as Dutch artist Giny Vos unveils ‘Endless Horizon,’ a light artwork designed to enhance a tunnel beneath the E314 motorway. This installation serves as a vital link between the bustling commercial area of Stalenstraat and the tranquil green space of Stiemervallei, effectively bridging the divide created by the motorway. The dynamic lighting not only beautifies the tunnel but also symbolizes a connection between these contrasting environments. The project emphasizes sustainability, with solar panels powering the installation. Initially, Vos proposed placing solar panels in the middle of the motorway; however, due to potential conflicts with future road developments, the design was adapted. Culture Alderman Annie Nagels highlighted the need for a solution that would not interfere with road expansion plans, prompting Vos and the project team to explore alternative sustainable power sources. In a related initiative, a 40-meter section of the concrete bike path has been upgraded with a new solar panel system, marking a significant advancement for Limburg. These innovative panels are designed to withstand vehicular traffic, mud, and slippery conditions, while their bright blue color adds a unique aesthetic to the path. This upgrade exemplifies the integration of modern technology into everyday infrastructure, showcasing a commitment to both functionality and sustainability. The project, managed by Soltech at Thor Park in Genk, is set to be completed by the end of the week. Nagels noted that the blue color symbolizes the Stiemerbeek, reinforcing the connection between the bike path and the surrounding environment, while enhancing the overall impact of Vos’s artwork.
