In Turnhout, a new initiative called Silver Routes has been launched, introducing 78 benches specifically designed for seniors and individuals with disabilities. This project, spearheaded by Marc Boogers, aims to enhance mobility and accessibility in the area. The benches, which are strategically placed along paths leading to the ring road and near residential care centers, are intended to provide resting spots for those who may struggle with longer walks. As of now, 50 of the benches have already been installed. The design of the benches was influenced by feedback from seniors who expressed the need for more resting places while walking to the city center. Kelly Verheyen, who advocates for equal opportunities, noted that seniors actively participated in identifying locations for the benches. They tested various designs and selected a model that features a height of 53 centimeters, along with armrests, a backrest, and a footrest, ensuring comfort and ease of use. The Silver Routes were officially opened on September 25th, and the community response has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents like Connie have shared their satisfaction with the benches, highlighting their comfort and the ease they provide for standing up. This initiative is expected to encourage more seniors to walk to the city center, where they can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and social opportunities available. By improving the walking experience for seniors and those with disabilities, the project aims to foster social interaction and reduce feelings of loneliness. The presence of comfortable benches is anticipated to enhance the overall enjoyment of the area, allowing more people to gather and appreciate the local sights and sounds together.
