Minneapolis offers discounted pet vaccines for rabies protection

Minneapolis residents will soon have access to discounted pet vaccines aimed at protecting against rabies, particularly from bat exposure. The initiative is being organized by Minneapolis Animal Care & Control, which will offer appointments at its headquarters located in the Willard-Hay neighborhood. The center emphasizes the critical importance of vaccinations, stating that rabies is fatal in pets if they are not vaccinated. Center director Tony Schendel highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that unvaccinated pets may face dire consequences, including impoundment if they are exposed to bats. In the event of a bat bite or exposure, pet owners are advised to seek immediate veterinary care or visit local community clinics for a rabies booster within 72 hours. The city has identified specific clinics, such as the Creekview Recreation Center and VeTouch, where residents can take their pets for urgent care. This proactive approach aims to prevent the need for pet surrender or euthanasia due to rabies exposure. The Minnesota Department of Health has warned that bats can enter homes through small openings, with the peak season for bat-human interactions occurring from July to September. Residents are encouraged to hire bat removal specialists if they encounter bats in their homes to mitigate risks. Additionally, the Minnesota Animal Bites and Rabies Hotline is available for those who suspect exposure to rabies.
