- This initiative aims to enhance the coastal environment and attract tourism, with an expected completion time of two years.
The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has granted clearance for a significant waterfront development project in Kashimira, spanning from Varsave Bridge to Ghodbunder Fort. This decision was made during the MCZMA's 178th meeting on September 10, with formal permission issued on September 23. The project, proposed by Shiv Sena legislator Pratap Sarnaik, is designed to conserve the coastal environment along a 1.8 km stretch of the Gulf coast. It aims to create an eco-friendly waterfront that aligns with similar initiatives in the region. The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has developed a comprehensive plan for the project, which includes various gardens, children's play areas, immersion Ghats, and a well-equipped jetty. However, the MCZMA has imposed restrictions on certain activities, particularly water sports, which cannot be conducted in the intertidal areas and mangrove buffer zones. This decision reflects a commitment to environmental conservation while still promoting recreational opportunities. Funding of Rs 150 crore has been allocated for the project, and a contractual agency has been selected to execute the work following a competitive bidding process. The first phase of construction is set to commence next month, pending further approvals from other regulatory bodies. The project is anticipated to not only beautify the area but also establish it as a notable tourist destination. The use of eco-friendly materials for construction is a key aspect of the development, ensuring that the project aligns with sustainable practices.
