Kodiak explores offroad trucking for profit in remote oil fields

Kodiak Robotics, a Silicon Valley startup, is shifting its focus to offroad trucking to enhance the commercial viability of its driverless technology. The company has secured a groundbreaking contract with Atlas Energy to operate autonomous trucks that will transport sand between sand mines and oil fields in the Permian Basin, starting in early 2025. This initiative aims to address the significant labor shortages in the region, where hiring drivers is particularly challenging. The autonomous trucks will operate on private roads, allowing Kodiak to avoid many regulatory hurdles associated with public roadways. By running at speeds below 20 miles per hour, the trucks can simplify the technological challenges related to sensor perception and reaction times. Kodiak's pivot comes at a time when the self-driving vehicle industry is beginning to show signs of progress, with other companies like Waymo and Gatik also making strides in autonomous transportation. The company has raised approximately $170 million since its inception in 2018 and is exploring various applications for its technology, including military contracts with the U.S. Army. Don Burnette, Kodiak's CEO, emphasizes the importance of targeting industries that genuinely require autonomous solutions.
