University of Missouri Student Group Heartbroken Over Event Name Change
- University of Missouri Black student group told to rename their BBQ event.
- Event originally named 'Welcome Black BBQ' now renamed 'Welcome Black and Gold BBQ'.
- Controversy arises over name change of the event.
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Legion of Black Collegians at the University of Missouri expressed deep disappointment after the university mandated a name change for its upcoming barbecue event from "Welcome Black BBQ" to "Welcome Black and Gold BBQ." The student government, which represents Black students, stated on Instagram that it had fought for months to retain the original name but ultimately felt compelled to proceed with the modified title to avoid jeopardizing their efforts and resources early in the academic year. University spokesperson Christopher Ave defended the decision, emphasizing the institution's commitment to inclusivity. He stated that the name change was necessary to ensure that the event reflects a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their backgrounds. The Legion of Black Collegians, founded in 1968 in response to racially insensitive practices on campus, described itself as the only Black student government in the nation, distinguishing itself from other institutions that have Black Student Unions or Alliances. Despite the name change, the group affirmed that the essence of the barbecue event would remain intact, serving as a vital gathering for Black students to connect and build community. They initially considered canceling the event but have since encouraged participation while vowing to resist any further alterations to their programming. The group expressed determination to prevent similar situations in the future, warning that the erasure of their events' visibility could undermine their presence on campus. This incident follows a history of racial tensions at the university, notably the protests in 2015 that highlighted the administration's inadequate response to racial issues.
