iFixit launches portable soldering iron for easier repairs

iFixit has announced the launch of a portable soldering iron, named Fixhub, aimed at making component repairs more accessible for home users. This announcement coincides with Apple's recent event, highlighting the ongoing tension between iFixit and Apple regarding repairability. The Fixhub is a 100-watt battery-powered soldering iron that heats up in five seconds and boasts an eight-hour battery life. It also features USB-C ports for charging other devices, making it a versatile tool for users. The decision to create this soldering iron stems from iFixit's dissatisfaction with existing products on the market. The founder's experience of needing to use an extension cord to fix a stereo in his car prompted the company to develop a more user-friendly solution. The Fixhub is designed to be beginner-friendly, incorporating features such as a sleep mode, fall protection, and a temperature indicator light. This launch comes at a time when Apple has been gradually improving its stance on user repairs, influenced by the rise of right-to-repair legislation. While Apple has introduced at-home repair kits, it continues to resist certain aspects of repairability, such as parts pairing. However, recent reports suggest that Apple may be opening up to third-party components, indicating a shift in their approach to repairability. The Fixhub will be available for $80 starting October 15, with pre-sales already open in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe. Additionally, iFixit is offering a $300 package that includes the soldering iron, an extra battery, and other repair tools, further emphasizing their commitment to enhancing repair accessibility for users.
