- This trade aims to enhance the Orioles' performance in the upcoming season.
— In a strategic move to strengthen their starting rotation, the Baltimore Orioles have acquired right-hander Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for three minor league players. This acquisition comes as the Orioles, currently leading the AL East, aim for their second consecutive division title while grappling with significant injuries to key pitchers Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells. Eflin, 30, has a record of 5-7 with a 4.09 ERA this season and is signed through 2025, making him a valuable asset for both the current season and the future. The Orioles will benefit from Eflin's experience, especially as they navigate the uncertainty surrounding ace Corbin Burnes, who is eligible for free agency. As part of the deal, the Rays will pay $1 million to cover Eflin's assignment bonus. In addition to Eflin, the Orioles also bolstered their bullpen by acquiring reliever Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Cristian Pache from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Austin Hays. Despite the recent additions, Baltimore's rotation depth remains a concern, with journeyman Albert Suarez and rookie Cade Povich having to fill in for injured starters. The Rays received outfielder Matthew Etzel, right-hander Jackson Baumeister, and utilityman Mac Horvath from the Orioles' farm system. Notably, Horvath was ranked as Baltimore’s No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The Orioles also designated right-hander Vinny Nittoli for assignment on the same day.
