Mumbai offers tax rebates for installing solar panels to boost sustainability

In a significant move towards sustainability, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced plans to offer a property tax rebate of up to 2% for housing societies and commercial establishments that install solar panels on their properties. This initiative aims to encourage the use of renewable energy sources and to align with the city's broader environmental goals. The BMC has a framework called the 'Clean Society, Green Society' scheme, which offers various tax incentives to housing societies adopting eco-friendly practices. The BMC currently provides a 5% rebate for housing societies that effectively manage their wet waste, complemented by a similar incentive for those who recycle dry waste. These initiatives reflect the civic body’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and responsible waste management. In addition, the corporation has previously proposed a property tax incentive of 5% for housing societies that utilize sewage treatment water for their purposes. Another noteworthy aspect of the BMC's environmental strategy includes the implementation of rainwater harvesting systems mandated by the state government in 2006. However, many housing societies have neglected this rule, prompting the corporation to offer a 2% rebate for societies that do adopt rainwater harvesting systems. The introduction of a property tax benefit for the installation of solar panels is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the overall environmental sustainability of the city's infrastructure. To realize this potential change, the civic body plans to seek the necessary permissions from the state government's Urban Development Department, which may be required for implementing this initiative.
