iOS 26 public beta launched with compatibility for numerous iPhones
- Apple released the public beta of iOS 26 on July 26.
- Only certain iPhone models can install the new beta, excluding some iPhone XS models.
- The final version of iOS 26 will be publicly available in September.
In the United States, on July 26, Apple launched the public beta of its next-generation iPhone software, iOS 26. The company has made this beta available to select iPhone users with compatible devices. Users are encouraged to test the software, although Apple warns that the beta may not be suitable for daily use due to potential bugs and app compatibility issues. The list of compatible devices includes various iPhone models from the iPhone 11 through to the latest, which includes iPhone 16 and its variants. Notably, the iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) is also part of this compatibility list. The only exceptions to compatibility are the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, despite those devices being capable of running the latest general-release software, iOS 18. While interested users are encouraged to back up their iPhones before proceeding with the beta installation, they can sign up through Apple's beta testing site. The installation process involves downloading a sizeable 17.4GB update through the Software Update feature in the iPhone's Settings app. Users should exercise caution, as the software is still in beta form and may contain unreliable features or reduced battery life during operation. As the public beta progresses, the final version is expected to be released in September, aligning with the launch of Apple's new iPhone models. Users are advised to use secondary devices for beta testing, ensuring that their primary device remains functional without the risks associated with installing beta software.
