Team USA has announced that athletes Steve Serio and Nicky Nieves will serve as flag bearers for the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. The duo will represent the United States during the opening ceremony scheduled for August 28. Serio, a seasoned wheelchair basketball player, has a remarkable history in the Paralympics, having previously competed in four Games since 2008. He is an incomplete paraplegic, a condition stemming from surgery he underwent at just 11 months old to remove a spinal tumor. At 36 years old, Serio is gearing up for his fifth Paralympic appearance, aiming to defend his gold medal. Ahead of the Games, Team USA shared a nostalgic video on Instagram featuring Serio reflecting on his past experiences and achievements. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Nicky Nieves, a sitting volleyball player, also boasts a gold medal from her debut at the 2016 Rio Games. Born without a left hand, Nieves has been involved in sports since childhood, excelling in volleyball, cheerleading, and track and field. The 2024 Paris Paralympic Games will be historic, as it marks the first time the event will be held in the City of Light. The Games will commence with the opening ceremony on August 28 and conclude on September 8, featuring over 4,000 athletes competing in 22 different sports from around the globe. Team USA is poised to showcase its talent and determination on this prestigious international stage.
