Israel invests nearly $940 million to rebuild Ashkelon and western Negev

In response to the devastating October 7 Hamas attacks, the Israeli government approved a substantial investment of NIS 3.2 billion (approximately $940 million) to aid in the rehabilitation and development of Ashkelon and the surrounding Western Negev region. This plan was officially enacted by the government on a recent Monday, showcasing a national effort to recover from the significant losses and disruptions caused by the terrorist attacks. The first part of the initiative allocates around NIS 1.4 billion ($410 million) specifically for Ashkelon, with a focus on enhancing education, public infrastructure, cultural programs, and local economic growth, along with improving security measures in the area. The second phase of this comprehensive initiative emphasizes long-term development for the years 2025 to 2029 and will provide NIS 1.8 billion ($530 million) to six regional authorities in the Western Negev, including Ofakim, Netivot, Merhavim, Eshkol, Shaar HaNegev, and Sdot Negev. This aspect of the plan is designed to bolster education and stimulate industrial growth, while also establishing new innovation hubs and facilities, such as an Agritech complex in Netivot and a biogas plant in Merhavim. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underscored the government’s commitment to supporting southern residents, recognizing their resilience throughout the prolonged conflict. He reaffirmed the government's dedication to rebuilding not just physical infrastructure but also the spirit and optimism of communities in the south, ensuring they regain their strength and vitality. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich emphasized that this investment is beyond mere finances, viewing it as a holistic endeavor encompassing spirit, faith, and a visionary approach to the future of the region.
