- The incident has shocked the community and raised concerns about safety measures.
Kolkata police have arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Although not an employee of the hospital, Roy was frequently seen on the premises due to his role with the Kolkata Police, where he assisted in various capacities, including disaster management and traffic control. His position granted him access to different hospital departments, raising concerns about security protocols. Roy allegedly exploited his position by running a racket that charged patients' relatives for securing hospital admissions and finding beds in nearby nursing homes. Despite lacking official police credentials, he misrepresented himself as a police officer, wearing a Kolkata Police-branded T-shirt and using a bike with a police tag, which led many to mistakenly believe he was an actual cop. His familiarity with the hospital environment allowed him to navigate the premises with ease. Following the crime, Roy reportedly confessed to the police without showing remorse, even suggesting he should be hanged for his actions. He was identified as a suspect through CCTV footage that captured him entering the hospital's emergency building around the time of the incident. A Bluetooth headset found near the victim was also linked to him, further solidifying the evidence against him. In response to the shocking incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a comprehensive investigation and urged the West Bengal government to ensure justice is served. The IMA has also reached out to Union Minister JP Nadda, advocating for improved safety measures for doctors, particularly women, in their workplaces.
