Greensburg, Pa. – Local Churches Unite for Community Service in October

This October, several congregations in Westmoreland County are mobilizing to assist those in need through a community service initiative. The First Presbyterian Church in Irwin, Community United Methodist Church in Harrison City, Norwin Christian Church, and Norwin Church of the Nazarene have joined forces under the non-profit organization, The Carpenter's Apprentice. Their mission is to improve living conditions for the less fortunate in the Irwin area while spreading the gospel. Pastor Mark Smith of the Norwin Church of the Nazarene highlighted the range of services offered by volunteers, which include home repairs such as deck and porch construction, step repairs, painting, and safety improvements like installing grab bars and wheelchair ramps. The Carpenter's Apprentice, which had been inactive during the pandemic, is now being revitalized by local pastors eager to serve their community. Importantly, assistance is available to anyone in need, regardless of their religious affiliation or church membership, as long as they reside within a 30-minute radius of Irwin, covering areas from McKeesport to Jeannette. The Fall Fixup event is scheduled for October 11-13, with plans to complete four to five projects, contingent on volunteer participation. Pastor Smith emphasized the power of unity in their efforts, stating, "When we are unified, we can do anything together." He expressed the importance of demonstrating care for neighbors in need, reinforcing the core values of the church and its commitment to community service.
