July 28 (UPI) – American swimmers Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh secured gold and silver medals, respectively, in the 100-meter butterfly, contributing to a total of seven medals earned by Team USA on the second day of events at the Paris Olympics. Huske expressed her emotional response to the victory, stating, "I don't even know how to process it. I feel like I'm gonna cry, but also smiling." Following a strong performance on Saturday, where Team USA tied with Australia for an Olympic-best five medals, the American team increased its overall medal count to twelve, outpacing second-place France by four medals. Japan currently holds third place with seven medals. Notably, Team USA, France, Korea, and China have each secured three gold medals thus far in the competition. Haley Batten kicked off the medal-winning day for Team USA, although the gold in her event went to France's Pauline Ferrand Prevot, who finished with a time of 1:26:02. Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita claimed the silver medal in the same event. In fencing, Lee Kiefer triumphed over fellow American Lauren Scruggs in the women's foil individual gold medal match, adding two more medals to Team USA's tally.
