Lockheed Martin pivots to enhance F-35 capabilities following sixth-gen losses

In recent developments, Lockheed Martin announced a strategic pivot to enhance the existing F-35 Lightning II fighter jet after falling short in securing contracts for sixth-generation fighter jets. The company has been sidelined from the U.S. Navy’s F/A-XX program and has not been chosen to produce the upcoming sixth-generation aircraft, termed F-47, which will ultimately replace the Air Force’s F-22 Raptors. This new model aims to provide approximately 80% of the capabilities of the soon-to-be-developed F-47 at a significantly reduced cost, appealing to military budget constraints. Lockheed has also expressed an interest in potentially exporting these upgraded models to allied nations, contingent on the permissions granted by Washington. Furthermore, Lockheed Martin has confirmed it will not challenge the Air Force’s decision to select Boeing for the NGAD program, thereby focusing instead on upgrading its existing platforms to maintain relevancy in the evolving defense landscape.
