Story

ST. LOUIS (AP) — In a strategic move to bolster their roster, the Texas Rangers have acquired catcher Carson Kelly from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for two minor league players. The transaction, announced on Sunday night, positions Kelly as a likely backup to Gold Glove winner Jonah Heim. This season, Kelly has played 60 games for the Tigers, posting a batting average of .240 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. Throughout his nine-season career, Kelly has maintained a .224 batting average, accumulating 52 home runs and 199 RBIs while playing for teams including St. Louis, Arizona, and Detroit. The Tigers, in return for Kelly, received catcher Liam Hicks and right-hander Tyler Owens. Hicks has been performing well in Double-A Frisco, hitting .260 with four home runs and 33 RBIs over 80 games this season. Meanwhile, Owens has shown promise with a 2-0 record, a 2.80 ERA, and eight saves in 26 appearances. The Rangers, who are the defending World Series champions, currently sit third in the American League West standings. They recently completed a successful three-game sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays and are set to begin a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. This acquisition reflects the Rangers' commitment to enhancing their roster as they aim for another successful season.
