In Japan, the Tokyo Auto Salon, which is known as the largest car customizing show in the country and the third largest globally, took place recently. During this event, Toyota's racing division, Gazoo Racing, presented the GR Yaris M Concept. This unveiling drew considerable attention due to its significant modifications compared to the standard GR Yaris hatchback. The most notable upgrade was the replacement of the original 1.6-liter turbo engine with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, capable of producing over 400 horsepower. Furthermore, a major change involved the transition from a front-engine layout to a mid-engine configuration, enhancing its performance capabilities. The GR Yaris has made a name for itself since its launch in 2020, earning accolades such as the 2021 UK Car of the Year, and had gained recognition in various motorsport competitions. At the unveiling, it was revealed that the racing variant of the GR Yaris would aim for even more power, exceeding 600 horsepower, targeting serious racing circuits, including Japan’s Super GT Series. The design change to a mid-engine setup suggests a potential future for Toyota in producing mid-engined cars, possibly to meet evolving engine regulations by 2027. During the event, the engaging presence of Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda, who suggested the concept changes, was evident. The model’s nickname 'M' stands for 'Morizo', a name Toyoda uses in racing contexts. The GR Yaris M Concept may also hint at Toyota's future endeavors, possibly in competitive racing such as WRC rally events. The automotive community anticipates how this concept model will influence Toyota's next generation of performance vehicles and motorsport ventures. In addition to the GR Yaris M Concept, Toyota announced their GR Yaris TG RR version, in which Akio Toyoda plans to participate in the Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race. This involvement reflects the commitment to both innovation and motor sport development consistent with the company's direction under Toyoda’s leadership.
