Emergency declared as bushfire ravages coastal communities in Western Australia
- Emergency warnings have been issued for several coastal communities affected by an out-of-control bushfire.
- Evacuation routes have been compromised, leaving some residents unable to leave their properties safely.
- Around 200 firefighters are engaged in combating the blaze, which has already burned through 43,000 hectares of land.
In Western Australia, alarming conditions have emerged as bushfires threaten coastal communities. An extensive blaze has prompted emergency warnings for regions including Wedge Island, Grey, Cervantes, Nambung, and Cooljarloo, located within the Shire of Dandaragan. Residents were informed that evacuation routes have been cut off, leading to dangerous circumstances where it was deemed too late for some to leave their homes. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services raised the alarm, advising that attempting to leave would jeopardize lives. While some individuals in Cervantes were instructed to evacuate safely in a northerly direction, the situation remains dire as over 200 firefighters work tirelessly in challenging conditions. Crews are actively constructing containment lines to protect the town of Cervantes, home to about 500 residents, from the incessant advance of the flames, which are reported to be moving westward towards key populated areas. Multiple road closures, including parts of Indian Ocean Drive, have been implemented as the safety of residents remains of utmost priority. Briefly, the Dandaragan fire resulted from a tragic car accident earlier in the week, further complicating emergency responses. The relentless fire has already consumed around 43,000 hectares of bushland, highlighting the severity of this ongoing crisis. Additionally, two volunteer firefighters sustained injuries while battling the flames, underscoring the risks faced by those on the front lines. Efforts to control the fire are aided by a significant aerial response, featuring four fixed-wing aircraft, two helicopters, and additional large tankers sent from New South Wales. As the community grapples with escalating threats, an evacuation center has been established at the Jurien Bay Sports and Recreation Centre, offering refuge to those forced from their homes. Nambung National Park has also been closed due to the fire's proximity and potential hazards posed to visitors.
