Story

Curaçao, a Caribbean island, is set to enhance its water supply system with the recent signing of a 20-year Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) agreement between Aqualectra, the government-owned water and electricity utility, and Seven Seas Water Group, a multinational Water-as-a-Service provider. This partnership comes after a competitive tender process conducted earlier this year, wherein Seven Seas was selected to construct a new seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant. The facility will be located at Hato West, replacing an existing site in Mundo Nobo, and is expected to initiate operations in October 2026. The new plant is projected to supply a minimum of 25,000 cubic meters of drinking water daily, contributing to about 50% of the island's total drinking water demand. Aqualectra’s Interim CEO, Ms. Neysa Isenia, highlighted the critical need for this project to address current and future water quality demands among Curaçao's residents and visitors. Isenia expressed gratitude towards Aqualectra's team for their diligence throughout the selection process and conveyed excitement about collaborating with Seven Seas Water Group for the essential water infrastructure. Seven Seas Water Group CEO, Mr. Henry Charrabé, emphasized the importance of this agreement for both parties, remarking on Aqualectra's long-term planning and dedication to quality and safety. He stated that this agreement represents one of the most significant public desalination projects in the Caribbean over the last ten years, showcasing a robust Water-as-a-Service model aligned with Aqualectra's strategic objectives. The company has built a reputable presence in delivering decentralized water and wastewater treatment solutions across various regions, including the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America. As Aqualectra continues to serve over 80,000 households, this partnership with Seven Seas Water Group marks a pivotal step in strengthening Curaçao's water infrastructure. With many residents relying on Aqualectra for quality water service, this new plant aims to enhance reliability and meet the pressing demand for safe drinking water, ensuring the well-being of the island's population for the decades to come.
