Rapidan Dam Store Reopens After Summer Flooding in Mankato
- The Rapidan Dam Store was demolished after severe flooding caused structural failures.
- The store's new location in Mankato was approved by the city council in August.
- The reopening of the store represents a significant recovery effort for the local community.
In Mankato, Minnesota, a family store that was lost due to severe flooding this summer is set to reopen. The Rapidan Dam Store, which had been a cherished local establishment for over 50 years, was purchased by Blue Earth County officials in June after the original building was demolished to prevent it from collapsing into the Blue Earth River. This decision followed the partial failure of the dam's abutment, which was exacerbated by the flooding that also led to the collapse of the Hruska family's home. The store's relocation to Mankato was approved by the city council in August, allowing it to occupy the former site of the Wagon Wheel Cafe. Fortunately, the Hruska family managed to salvage and preserve memorabilia from the store before its destruction. An online fundraiser was launched to support the family, raising significant funds in response to the disaster. The new location will operate seven days a week, providing a sense of continuity for the community and honoring the store's legacy.
