New Fleet to Fight Dartmoor Wildfires
- Firefighters in Dartmoor have received a new fleet of vehicles to combat wildfires.
- The vehicles aim to assist in tackling wildfires in the remote parts of Dartmoor.
- The initiative is crucial to protect the moorland and surrounding areas from devastating fires.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has introduced a new fleet of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) designed to improve wildfire response in Dartmoor National Park. These eight-wheel-drive vehicles are equipped with specialized low-impact tires, enabling crews to access remote areas without causing harm to the delicate landscape. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of firefighting operations while preserving the environment. Watch manager Chris Boston highlighted the advantages of the ATVs, stating that they significantly increase the service's capabilities for initial wildfire attacks while utilizing fewer resources. Traditionally, the service deploys between four to eight fire engines to combat wildfires, which can incur costs of up to £360 per hour. The introduction of ATVs is expected to streamline operations and reduce financial burdens. Boston emphasized the importance of keeping fire engines within local communities, noting that the ATVs can effectively navigate challenging terrains. The vehicles are capable of towing a trailer containing 200 liters of water, making them a practical solution for immediate firefighting needs. This capability allows the fire service to respond more swiftly to incidents while maintaining a presence in the communities they serve. Overall, the deployment of ATVs represents a strategic advancement in wildfire management on Dartmoor, balancing the need for effective firefighting with environmental stewardship. The service anticipates that these vehicles will enhance safety for both the public and the natural landscape.
