Wood From the Hood reclaims urban wood

In 2008, Rick and Cindy Siewert established a Minneapolis-based business focused on reclaiming urban wood. Their journey began when they salvaged wood from an old ash tree that needed removal from their property. The company sources wood from various situations, including storm damage, disease, and construction projects. A significant portion of their materials comes from the city of Minneapolis and local tree services, allowing them to repurpose wood that would otherwise go to waste. Design Director Kelley Hermes plays a crucial role in transforming reclaimed wood into custom projects. For instance, wood from trees removed to accommodate the new southwest light rail line is being crafted into benches for the light rail stops. Additionally, they are creating desks for siblings who lost their father in a house fire, using wood from trees that had to be cut down due to the incident. This personal touch adds sentimental value to their creations. The business also offers a variety of products in their lumber store, including cribbage boards, cutting boards, and cocktail smokers, all made from reclaimed wood. Each item features a sticker indicating its origin, connecting customers to the story behind the wood. Any unusable wood is repurposed into firewood, wood chips, or mulch, or sent to District Energy for energy production. Wood From the Hood is actively engaging with the community, hosting events like the Holiday Makers Market, which showcases local vendors and promotes sustainable practices. Their efforts not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also foster a sense of community and remembrance through their custom projects.
