Ukraine secures gas import deal with Azerbaijan amid ongoing threats

Ukraine has successfully completed a pilot project to import natural gas from Azerbaijan utilizing the Trans-Balkan corridor. On August 18, Deputy Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk confirmed the achievement and indicated ongoing negotiations for a comprehensive contract to ensure continued gas supplies in the future. This deal comes at a critical time as military threats from Russia to Ukrainian energy infrastructure have escalated, posing serious risks to the supply chain. State-owned Naftogaz made significant headway earlier, with the initiation of gas imports from Azerbaijan through the Trans-Balkan route on July 28. This marked the first instance of such imports and represented a crucial step toward diversifying energy sources for Ukraine. CEO Serhii Koretskyi highlighted the strategic importance of this test delivery, which is currently taking place through a route connecting Bulgaria, Romania, and the Ukrainian border. Despite these advancements, the situation remains precarious due to Russia's increased military activities, particularly targeted attacks on energy infrastructure. Recently, Russian forces executed a large-scale drone strike on a SOCAR oil depot in Ukraine's Odesa region, resulting in extensive damage that left the facility inoperable. This underscores the urgency for Ukraine to secure stable and diverse energy supplies amid ongoing hostilities.
