Kenyan Security Forces Abduct and Kill Protesters
- Human Rights Watch reported widespread abductions and killings linked to anti-government protests in Kenya.
- 61 individuals reportedly lost their lives during the protests as discontent grew over a proposed tax increase.
- The Kenyan government is called upon to investigate these allegations and ensure accountability.
Between June and August, anti-government protests erupted in Kenya due to discontent over a proposed tax increase. Human Rights Watch reported that during this period, security forces allegedly abducted, tortured, and killed individuals associated with these demonstrations. Activists believe that many of those taken were held in secret facilities and denied access to legal representation or family. Numerous victims, including 20-year-old Kennedy Njeru, were later found dead, prompting outrage among families and human rights organizations. Mary Muthoni Mwangi's son was discovered in the mortuary after being missing for four days, highlighting the tragic consequences of these actions. Despite these allegations, Kenyan authorities, including President William Ruto, have denied involvement and called for more evidence to be submitted regarding the missing persons. However, the human rights community continues to demand accountability and justice for the many lives lost and the suffering endured during the protests.
