Annalise, a sophomore at Elkhorn Area High School, has been raising awareness for epilepsy through an annual 26-mile walk with her father, Troy, for the past three years. This initiative was born out of a desire to support the epilepsy foundation, as one in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Annalise herself lives with the condition, which can cause her to experience seizures that leave her unresponsive, a situation that can be alarming for those around her. The walk begins at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex and concludes at the Milwaukee County Zoo, utilizing the Milwaukee County Parks system. The route includes a mix of neighborhoods and wooded areas, making it a scenic yet challenging trek. Annalise's determination to participate in this event reflects her independent spirit, despite the concerns her parents have regarding her condition. Support from her community, including teachers and classmates, has been instrumental in her journey. Ryan Mittelstaedt, a teacher and cheer coach, noted the awareness and support surrounding Annalise, ensuring that there is a plan in place for her safety during activities. Her father, Troy, expresses pride in her independence while also acknowledging the protective instincts of a parent. Annalise encourages others with epilepsy to persevere through their challenges, emphasizing that while the journey may seem daunting at first, it can improve over time. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the importance of awareness and support for those living with epilepsy.
