Man Dies in BASE Jumping Accident at Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, Ariz. – A man died earlier this month after a fatal BASE jumping accident at Grand Canyon National Park. On August 1, park dispatchers received a report of a visitor who had attempted to BASE jump from Yavapai Point, resulting in a 500-foot fall from the South Rim. When park rangers arrived, they discovered the man's body at the base of the canyon, alongside a deployed parachute. Recovery teams swiftly reached the scene, and the victim's body was airlifted out of the canyon and transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed, pending notification of next of kin. The National Park Service, in conjunction with the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. BASE jumping, which involves parachuting from fixed objects, is strictly prohibited in all areas of Grand Canyon National Park due to the inherent risks involved.
