Fawziyah Javed, a 31-year-old pregnant woman from Leeds, was tragically killed by her husband, Kashif Anwar, who pushed her off a 50ft cliff at Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh on September 2, 2021. This incident occurred during a trip to the hill, where Fawziyah had previously expressed her intention to leave Anwar. Just days before her death, she had reported his violent behavior to West Yorkshire Police, highlighting a history of domestic abuse. Following her death, Fawziyah's mother, Yasmin Javed, visited the site to unveil a memorial bench in her daughter's honor. This bench serves as a tribute not only to Fawziyah but also to all women who have lost their lives due to domestic violence. Yasmin expressed her profound grief, stating that their family has been irrevocably shattered by the loss of her daughter, who was described as perfect. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating the police's handling of Fawziyah's case, including potential racial discrimination in their response. The IOPC is reviewing emergency call recordings and assessing the risk posed by Anwar, as well as the police's failure to adequately protect Fawziyah despite her previous reports of abuse. Additionally, a Domestic Homicide Review is being conducted by Leeds City Council to scrutinize the police's contact with Fawziyah prior to her death. This review aims to identify any shortcomings in safeguarding victims of domestic abuse and to improve future responses to similar cases.
