Story

An exhibition showcasing art that documents the journeys of refugees from countries such as Honduras, Ukraine, and Malaysia has opened at the Sixteen Gallery in Cheltenham. Organized by the volunteer-run charity Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees, the exhibition features works by professional artists inspired by the memories of home, the challenges faced during their journeys, and their new lives in the UK. The exhibition commenced on July 26 and will run until July 31. Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees plays a vital role in supporting newcomers to the area, whether they are navigating the asylum process or have been resettled. Local volunteers engage in various community activities, including English classes, children's programs, and sports clubs, as well as providing practical assistance like bike repairs and transportation. Volunteer Anna Ost emphasized the importance of the exhibition, stating it offers a platform to share the stories of refugees and asylum seekers seeking safety in Cheltenham. The exhibition, themed "New Chapters," celebrates the resilience and hope of those who have faced adversity. Many of the featured artists have overcome significant challenges to find safety in the UK. Among the professional artists showcased are Eduardo Guerra, Oksana Fursovich, and Sara Rahman, among others. The event will also include music and food from the diverse cultures represented, enriching the community experience throughout the exhibition week.
