U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves announced on Tuesday that his office has charged 16 individuals in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, highlighting ongoing efforts to hold accountable those involved in the incident over three years ago. This update is part of a monthly report from Graves, who noted that a total of 1,488 people have faced charges related to the Capitol breach, with many accused of entering restricted federal property or assaulting law enforcement officers. The charges against the defendants vary, with some facing allegations of damaging federal property or possessing deadly weapons. A significant number of those charged have either been convicted or pleaded guilty, resulting in prison sentences for over half of them. Graves also mentioned that his office is closely monitoring the implications of a recent Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the scope of obstruction charges for 259 defendants, following a challenge from former police officer Joseph Fischer. The Supreme Court's decision requires a demonstration of tampering with physical evidence for obstruction charges, potentially benefiting numerous defendants who are now contesting their charges. However, some individuals, like Jacob Chansley, known as the "QAnon Shaman," who has already served his sentence, may not find it advantageous to re-enter the legal process. Chansley recently received a minor victory when a judge ordered the return of his distinctive helmet and spear. Graves's office has reiterated that all individuals charged with obstruction also face additional felony or misdemeanor charges, and prosecutors will evaluate the necessity of pursuing obstruction charges on a case-by-case basis moving forward.
