In a significant environmental initiative, FirstEnergy Corp. achieved the milestone of planting its 100,000th donated tree on December 9, 2024, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability. This accomplishment follows the launch of their tree planting and donation program in 2020, which initially set a goal to plant 10,000 trees. Over the years, the program exceeded expectations, with nearly 34,000 trees planted so far this year alone, surpassing the ambitious target of 25,000 trees by 2024. The initiative reflects FirstEnergy's dedication to improving the environment and supporting communities across its six-state service territory, comprising Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, and New York. FirstEnergy's tree planting efforts have not only contributed to environmental benefits but also enhanced the landscapes within communities. The company strategically chose to plant more than half of its trees in underserved areas, focusing on communities facing environmental challenges. The Green Teams, consisting of nearly 650 employees from various organizational roles, have dedicated more than 3,000 volunteer hours to almost 150 planting events this year alone. By providing native tree species, including fruit trees harvested for food banks, the program aims to create a sustainable future while fostering community engagement. Jessica Shaffer, Advanced Scientist and Lead of FirstEnergy's Green Teams, expressed pride in the accomplishments, emphasizing the program's growth since its inception. The dedication of volunteers and the company's commitment to the environment have played a crucial role in surpassing goals and making a meaningful impact. The successful execution of this program aligns with FirstEnergy's broader corporate responsibility efforts, which include sustainability and community engagement. FirstEnergy's future plans include ongoing partnerships with state park systems, garden clubs, schools, and environmental organizations to further enhance community landscapes and continue their positive environmental impact. As FirstEnergy expands its Green Teams and planting initiatives, the company stands firm in its mission to ensure a greener and healthier future for the regions it serves.
