Wegmans begins construction on new Pittsburgh-area store

Wegmans, the popular supermarket chain, is set to expand its footprint by building a new location in the Pittsburgh area, specifically in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. The local township supervisors granted final approval for the project, allowing Wegmans to commence construction along Cool Springs Drive. This store, which will encompass 115,000 square feet, is slated to open its doors in 2027, providing the local community with not just a grocery shopping option, but also a significant number of jobs. Wegmans has a substantial presence in Pennsylvania with 19 existing locations, the nearest being in Erie and State College. The initiative to expand into Pittsburgh has been in the works since 2024, when discussions about a new location were first initiated. Wegmans was targeting the Cranberry Springs complex, strategically located near significant transportation routes such as Route 228 and Interstate 79, and in proximity to the Pittsburgh Penguins' practice facility. The chairman of the Cranberry Township Board of Supervisors, Bruce Hezlep, emphasized that Wegmans is an excellent addition to the local market that will benefit residents by offering more choices and job opportunities. Wegmans' expansion is viewed as a timely response to the growing customer base in the western part of Pennsylvania, suggesting a broader migration of residents from the eastern regions of the state. Additionally, Wegmans has indicated they have received overwhelming interest from potential customers in Pittsburgh, with thousands of requests to open a store in the region over the last 30 years. Company representatives also noted that the fertile ground for their growth in this area aligns well with their plans, making Cranberry the perfect location from a strategic standpoint. The new location promises to offer a variety of products, including fresh produce, bakery items, deli products, and a selection of wine and beer. The store is expected to employ around 500 local residents, significantly contributing to the local economy and securing Wegmans' reputation as a strong community partner.
