Lanzarote Warns British Tourists to Stay Away

British travellers heading to Lanzarote's Playa Blanca have been issued a "black alert" due to significant environmental concerns, particularly regarding sewage issues at the popular beach. The warning, issued by conservation group Ecologistas en Accion, highlights the beach's deteriorating condition, which has been a favorite for tourists drawn to its golden sands and vibrant atmosphere. The group has flagged Playa Blanca as one of 48 beaches facing similar environmental challenges this year. The black flag designation stems from critical sewage discharges affecting the beach, prompting immediate action on May 4, when Playa Blanca was temporarily closed for cleanup efforts. The conservationists have been vocal about Spain's environmental mismanagement for nearly two decades, calling attention to the mishandling of waste, including improper disposal of items like nappies and wet wipes, as well as inadequate sewage treatment facilities. The report not only impacts Lanzarote but also highlights issues in other popular tourist destinations, including Malaga, Costa del Sol, Ibiza, and Tenerife. Among the 48 beaches listed, many are suffering from overdevelopment and poor wastewater management, which has led to ineffective pollutant removal from coastal waters. Additional concerns include chemical and noise pollution, industrial damage, and marine waste, raising alarms about the overall health of these cherished coastal areas. Ecologistas en Accion has also pointed out the construction of two hotels in Fuerteventura within protected zones, further emphasizing the need for stricter environmental regulations and better management practices to safeguard Spain's natural beauty.
