In response to the tragic building collapse in Shahbaz Village on Saturday, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has initiated a demolition drive targeting illegal constructions linked to the accused builder and developer. The operation led to the removal of seven unauthorized shops and modifications at the residence of builder Mahesh Khumbar. This action is part of a broader effort, with similar demolitions occurring across eight wards in Navi Mumbai. The demolition was spearheaded by Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr. Rahul Gethe, who confirmed that the Belapur ward office was responsible for the removal of the illegal structures. Additionally, eight shops constructed by Ravindra Waghmare, a relative of the second accused, Sharad Waghmare, were also demolished. NMMC officials reported that a total of 75 notices have been issued to individuals with illegal constructions, with plans for further notices in the near future. Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing illegal constructions, stating that a ward-wise survey has been conducted to pinpoint violations under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. The NMMC is committed to taking further action against illegal structures in the coming days. The building collapse, which occurred early Saturday morning, resulted in three fatalities and two injuries. Fortunately, alert residents managed to evacuate 52 individuals from the three-story Indira Nivas building, which was only 13 years old and built illegally on a gaothan plot.
