Liverpool Street Station Unveils New Polka Dot Artwork

A striking new artwork composed of silver polka dots has been unveiled outside Liverpool Street station, now the busiest railway station in Britain. Titled "Infinite Accumulation," this piece marks Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s first permanent public installation in the UK and her largest public sculpture to date. The project was funded by British Land and the City of London Corporation, and it represents the final installation of the Crossrail Art Programme for the Elizabeth line. Transport for London (TfL) has hailed the artwork as a "monumental addition" to the urban landscape, with Justine Simons, the deputy mayor for culture and the creative industries, expressing excitement for commuters and visitors alike. The installation comes at a time when Liverpool Street station has seen a surge in passenger numbers, particularly due to the new Elizabeth line services. Kusama, known for her distinctive style, commented on the significance of the piece, stating that "London is a massive metropolis with people of all cultures moving constantly." She explained that the spheres in the artwork symbolize unique personalities, while the curvilinear lines represent an underlying social structure that connects individuals within the city. Measuring 100 meters long, 10 meters high, and 12 meters wide, the highly reflective sculpture is designed to engage with both individual and collective experiences, enhancing the dynamic urban environment of London.
