DRC enhances Ukraine's mine clearance operations with advanced technology

Ukraine has been actively enhancing its mine clearance efforts in response to the challenges posed by explosive remnants of war following the armed conflict initiated by Russia. In August 2025, the Ministry of Defense announced that demining units had successfully cleared over 5,900 hectares of liberated territory from these hazardous remnants. As part of a collaborative project with the Danish Refugee Council, which runs from 2023 to 2026, the Ministry received advanced quadcopters along with other technical support to improve the monitoring and quality control of mine clearance operations. The use of these unmanned aerial systems marks a significant advancement in the country's approach to demining. Ruslan Berehula, the Head of the Secretariat of the National Mine Action Agency, has emphasized the importance of this technological support in enhancing the capabilities of defense specialists. These tools will not only allow for more effective monitoring of demined areas but also ensure quicker responses to the challenges presented by mining activities. This assistance aligns with Ukraine's broader goals of fostering safety in demined territories where communities are returning. Further training programs are planned to integrate personnel from the Ministry of Defense into the operational usage of these new technologies, thus ensuring that they meet both international and national standards in mine clearance quality control. These programs will incorporate practical sessions that utilize artificial intelligence technologies alongside the quadcopters, further expanding the skill set of those involved in mine action. The collaborative efforts with the DRC represent a crucial step in bolstering Ukraine's national mine action capacity, enabling better training and operational performance as the need for effective and safe mine clearance increases.
