U.S. Announces $500 Million Military Aid to the Philippines Amid Rising Tensions with China

MANILA, Philippines — In a significant move to bolster the Philippines' defense capabilities, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced $500 million in military funding during their visit to Manila on Tuesday. This funding aims to modernize the Philippine military and coast guard, reflecting shared concerns over China's aggressive actions in the South China Sea. The announcement follows a recent agreement between the Philippines and China to prevent clashes in disputed waters, particularly after a violent encounter on June 17. The military aid will enhance the Philippine navy's capabilities, with approximately $125 million allocated for improvements at military bases that will host U.S. forces under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. Blinken emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that both nations, along with other regional allies, are increasingly worried about China's coercive tactics in the region. Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo noted that the temporary arrangements to deescalate tensions have been welcomed by several countries, including Japan and Australia. Additionally, progress was reported on a proposed military intelligence-sharing pact, the General Security of Military Information Agreement, which could be finalized later this year. This agreement would facilitate the exchange of high-level intelligence and advanced weaponry between the U.S. and the Philippines, addressing past challenges in military cooperation.
