Rosewood Amsterdam opens as a luxurious cultural hub

In May 2025, the Rosewood Amsterdam officially opened its doors, marking the culmination of a decade-long transformation of the historic Palace of Justice. This five-star hotel is not just a place to stay; it has become a cultural landmark, reflecting Amsterdam's vibrant art scene. The hotel's design integrates elements from the building's historical roots, dating back to 1665, and features modern artworks that engage guests in a unique way. The transformation process was extensive, considering both the architectural significance and the artistic integration within the space. Located along the central Prinsengracht canal, the hotel showcases a variety of amenities designed to appeal to both local Amsterdam residents and international tourists. It offers spacious accommodations, including 134 rooms and five large apartment-style suites referred to as 'Houses.' Many of the hotel's interiors are inspired by renowned art institutions, such as the Rijksmuseum, and it even features video art sourced from the nearby Nxt Museum. The emphasis on art is prevalent throughout the hotel, with unique installations ranging from a vintage grand piano in the former courtroom to a vase made entirely of Smurf figures in the lobby. The hotel promotes a sense of community and hospitality, encouraging locals to explore the space. Thomas Harlander, the managing director, notes that many curious residents have visited to experience the hotel's offerings, including its landscaped courtyards by designer Piet Oudolf. The Rosewood Amsterdam also embraces the local food scene, providing guests with a taste of the gastronomic revival happening throughout the city. Although the hotel carries a hefty price tag, with some suites costing around €1,200 a night, it aims to challenge the traditional notions of luxury hospitality by making art and culture accessible to all.
