The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has imposed a $1 million fine on Lingo Telecom for facilitating a deepfake robocall that impersonated President Joe Biden's voice, misleading New Hampshire voters ahead of the Democratic primary. The robocall, which urged residents not to vote, was distributed through spoofed phone numbers, prompting the FCC to mandate that Lingo adhere strictly to caller ID authentication protocols. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the importance of transparency in communications, particularly when artificial intelligence is involved. The creator of the deepfake robocall, Steve Kramer, a Democratic operative working on Rep. Dean Phillips's campaign, claimed he produced the call as a stunt to highlight the risks associated with deepfake technology. Kramer, who faces a $6 million fine and 26 criminal charges, including voter intimidation, stated that his actions were not sanctioned by the Phillips campaign.
