CHICAGO, Illinois — A significant demonstration unfolded in Union Park on Monday, where approximately 3,500 pro-Palestinian activists gathered for a rally as part of the “March on the DNC.” The event featured prominent figures, including left-wing independent presidential candidate Cornel West, who called for voters to oppose Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party unless U.S. support for Israel is halted. In response, a counter-protest organized by pro-Israel groups, led by Pastor Jim Scudder of In Grace Church, sought to express their support for Israel. This group, which included members from Generation Zion, Israel 360, and the Philos Project, marched peacefully around the park while holding Israeli and American flags. They adhered to the sidewalk, respecting the permit held by the pro-Palestinian group, while police monitored the situation closely. Tensions escalated when pro-Palestinian “safety” personnel attempted to form a human chain to block the pro-Israel demonstrators. Despite this, the pro-Israel group continued their march, with some activists shouting pro-Palestinian slogans and expressing frustration towards the police for their protective measures. Isaac Woodward, an organizer from Generation Zion, emphasized the importance of their presence, stating that they aimed to ensure that pro-Israel voices are heard amidst the protests. He declared the event a success, highlighting the coalition of Christians and Jews advocating for the rights of Jewish people and a secure Israel.
