Police Officer Suspended After Incident at Manchester Airport

A man who was violently subdued by a police officer at Manchester Airport has been diagnosed with a cyst on his brain, according to a family lawyer. Akhmed Yakoob revealed that the man, identified as Fahir, underwent a CT scan following the incident, which has left his family "traumatised." Yakoob noted that Fahir's older brother, a police officer with Greater Manchester Police, is now fearful of returning to work due to the incident's fallout. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, prompting public outrage. The footage appears to show an officer kicking and stamping on a suspect who was already on the ground. In response, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that the officer involved has been suspended while the matter is investigated. The force acknowledged the public's concerns and stated that officers were responding to reports of an assault at the airport prior to the incident. Yakoob condemned the police's actions, asserting that "nothing justifies the barbaric treatment" displayed in the footage. Dal Babu, a former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent, echoed this sentiment, stating that the level of force used was "not reasonable." In light of the incident, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced that he and his deputy have met with the home secretary and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to ensure a swift and independent investigation involving community stakeholders.
