CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds faced a significant setback on Saturday as All-Star pitcher Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list due to elbow soreness. The right-hander, who boasts an impressive record of 9-4 with a 2.83 ERA and 162 strikeouts this season, had recently delivered a stellar performance, pitching seven innings of one-run ball against the Cardinals in a 4-1 victory. General manager Nick Krall confirmed that Greene's placement on the injured list is retroactive to Wednesday, emphasizing that the decision was made for precautionary reasons. "It’s elbow soreness. We’re going to be getting an MRI in the next couple of days to assess the situation," Krall stated. Greene, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019, has been a key player for the Reds this season. Krall acknowledged the difficulty of informing Greene about the injury but noted that the pitcher understood the necessity of the move. "He’s been tremendous this year, and we knew he was going to miss at least one start, so this was the best way we could do this," he added. The Reds are currently evaluating options for who will take Greene’s scheduled start on Monday, as they navigate this unexpected challenge to their pitching rotation.
