The landslide measured approximately 100 feet wide and was between 15 and 20 feet deep, covering the roadway with a combination of mud and debris. This incident, which took place near the Loveland ski area on the Clear Creek County side of the pass, was caused by melting snow that saturated the soil above the road, leading to the slide. Despite the absence of landslides in this area since 2003, CDOT officials were faced with the urgent task of cleansing the roadway for safety. On Tuesday, the Colorado Department of Transportation reported progress in their cleanup efforts, stating that approximately 85% of the mud and debris had been cleared from the road. Engineering teams also needed to assess the mountainside's stability before reopening the highway. This was crucial as the area remained closed for the safety of motorists, hikers, and cyclists. The situation further complicated transport logistics in the region, as trucks carrying hazardous materials were redirected through the Eisenhower Tunnel, potentially causing delays. By Wednesday afternoon, the persistence of CDOT crews paid off as the highway was cleared for reopening. Seven tandem dump trucks were utilized to remove 92 tons of mud and silt and, once no significant movement was observed on the mountainside, CDOT's geohazard specialists approved the reopening. Although access through Loveland Pass was restored, CDOT indicated that cleanup operations may continue from the shoulder of the roadway. Jessica Mykelbust, CDOT’s Denver Metro transportation director, expressed pride in the team's quick and professional response in restoring access to this critical mountain corridor.
