Shoplifter Hides in Tesla Trunk to Evade Police

A 35-year-old woman from San Marcos, Emely Yanagida, was arrested last week after allegedly stealing approximately $600 worth of products from Sephora and $250 worth from Lululemon. The incident unfolded in Irving, California, where Yanagida reportedly attempted to evade law enforcement by hiding in the trunk of her Tesla. Bodycam footage released by the police captures the surreal moment when officers discovered her concealed in the vehicle. According to authorities, Yanagida attempted to leave the Sephora store despite being confronted by loss prevention staff. After fleeing the scene, a bystander informed the police that she had entered a white Tesla and crawled into the trunk. Officers responded promptly, knocking on the trunk before opening it to find Yanagida lying inside. When questioned about her actions, she expressed fear of the police, stating, “Because you guys came after me.” In addition to the stolen items, police discovered Lululemon merchandise in her possession. Yanagida was subsequently charged with multiple offenses, including shoplifting, possession of burglary tools, and resisting arrest. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding retail theft and the lengths to which some individuals may go to avoid apprehension.
