Story

Outdoor enthusiasts can embark on a rewarding hike starting from a roadside verge south of Cuaich cottages, located approximately two miles north of the Dalwhinnie turnoff on the A9. The ascent to Cuaich reaches a modest height of 623 meters, but the total walking distance spans nearly nine miles. Hikers will follow an aqueduct leading to a power station and then to Loch Cuaich, where they can easily summit the 951-meter peak. While the mountain may not appear grand from below, the panoramic views from the summit offer a breathtaking perspective of upper Badenoch and Strathspey. Beinn Alligin, translating to "beautiful mountain," lives up to its name with stunning vistas that reward those who make the trek. Access to the mountain is convenient, with a car park situated by a bridge between Torridon and Inveralligin, just north of Torridon House. The hike begins with a scenic walk through wooded areas and over moorland alongside the river, providing a tranquil start to the adventure. As hikers ascend, they will encounter a steep pull up to the Horns of Alligin, a challenging yet exhilarating section of the route. This hike offers the opportunity to tackle two Munros in a circular route, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of the area’s natural beauty. The combination of accessible trails and stunning landscapes makes these hikes a must for any avid walker.
