This week, a significant military parade was conducted at the Butmir base in Bosnia and Herzegovina to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the EUFOR mission. The European Union Forces (EUFOR) have been overseeing the military implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement in the country since they took over from NATO's SFOR on December 2, 2004. The event highlighted the evolution of EUFOR’s role from direct peacekeeping to empowering local authorities, marking two decades of commitment to the stability and European integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the ceremony, EUFOR commander Major General László Sticz addressed the attendees, stating that the motto for his upcoming year of command would be "Still forward, together." This motto reflects EUFOR's past efforts and a shared vision for the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the European family. Sticz highlighted that their mission includes not only providing military assistance but also standing in solidarity with the local population during crises, such as floods and the COVID-19 pandemic. The motto signifies an unwavering dedication to the citizens of the country and aims to foster an environment of peace and cooperation. Additionally, Luigi Soreca, the Head of the European Union Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized the role of various international commanders who contributed significantly to the country’s progress throughout the two decades. He noted that EUFOR Althea stands as a crucial element of the EU’s support for Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path toward EU integration. The anniversary celebrations included a military parade and an exhibition at the European House in Sarajevo that showcased key moments from EUFOR's journey since 2004. These commemorative events served not only to reflect on two decades of EUFOR's presence and efforts in fostering peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also to reiterate a commitment to stand alongside the country as it continues its journey toward full European integration. The events signify a commitment to values fundamental to the European Union, including unity, democracy, and peace.
